Baby boomers retiring in droves. The tiny house movement. Downsizing to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s tough to pick up a magazine or read a trend article about how many people are seeking to downsize and simplify their lives.
Whatever the reason, many homeowners are realizing how much money they could save if they have less square footage. (e.g. heating, cooling, electricity, etc.). Most understand that smaller homes help them become more energy efficient and create less pollution.
This is especially important for retirees. According to the Washington Post,
10,000 baby boomers retire each day. Most are active seniors who prefer to spend their money on travel or other things that are important to them. Smaller spaces and less maintenance give them the time and money they need to live life on their own terms.
Downsizing is also becoming popular with millennials who prefer to keep their lives simple and clutter-free. Many of these individuals are part of the “gig” economy where temporary work is the norm, so the burden of a large mortgage isn’t even an option for them. Yet they still want their independence. These are some of the people who are moving into tiny homes, small condos and teeny apartments.
That doesn’t mean these people want to give up all the amenities they enjoy. Smart phones are critical. Smart TVs are also on the must-have list. They may not be connected via cable, but they enjoy streamed entertainment from Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu (to name a few). Many companies are creating smart ways for people who want to downsize to have their must-have items in unique ways that don’t take up too much space. Downsizing doesn’t mean giving up everything you love.
Here’s an example: TVMirrors that are also smart flatscreen televisions
. When you want to watch television, flip a switch and you’re good to go. When not in use, it’s a beautiful mirror. Both useful and valuable items merged into one smart unit. Less space. Less waste. Practical and beautiful at the same time.
So, go ahead and downsize. It might be the best decision for you to live your best life.
