There are many rules about home decor that people tend to believe. But, not all those ‘rules’ are logical! Let’s debunk some home decor myths.

Everything's got to match

Goodness, no! Everything shouldn't match. We aren't trying to get a portion of the furniture store home (as it is). There's got to be some variation in the furniture, colors, and textures used. Also, everything should not be the same 'age', because mixing the new and the old can generate a lot of variation and interesting vibes and also be great conversation starters. A DIY project, a rocking chair off Craigslist, or a hidden TV lift cabinet can add so much more texture and style to your space.

Low-light rooms should be painted white

That is a very common misperception. Surprisingly, rooms with sufficient natural light coming in can handle white paint a lot better than rooms that don’t get enough light. In fact, if there isn’t enough light, there isn’t enough radiance or energy for the walls to bounce off. Put together, it becomes dull light + dull walls look, which basically means it is a home decor fail. The solution-neutral shades work much better in low-light rooms.

You are stuck with the TV

Yes, the TV is a necessity. But no, you are not ‘stuck’ with a TV.  Of course, you need to have a TV in the living room or even the bedroom. And yes, it does mess up your interior decor plans, because it suddenly breaks the flow of things with its black hole look. But, we insist that you are not stuck with the TV. The keywords here are hidden TV lift cabinets. A  hidden TV lift cabinet is really a cabinet that can conveniently hide the TV whenever you want to.

Go with the trends

Ummm… as weird as it sounds, we wouldn’t recommend going 100% with the trends. The simple reason is that trends are either ‘in’ or ‘out’. So, you’d enjoy your decor and furniture when the trend is a rage, but as soon as the trend’s out, you’ll find the same furniture bothering you, even though it is all in great condition. The solution is to incorporate bits of the trend in your space so that if the trend fades, you only need to make a few changes. As for the rest, stick to the evergreens even though they may not exactly be trendy.

Home decor isn't only about aesthetics and gut feeling. It's also about applying a fair dose of functionality. If your decor is high on practicality, chances are that you will get to enjoy it longer.
