The good news for do-it-yourself homeowners is that TV lift cabinets are designed to be self-contained units — they arrive largely assembled, and the installation process is closer to setting up furniture than to a contractor project.
What "Installation" Actually Involves
For most floor-standing TV lift cabinets, installation consists of:
- Moving the cabinet to its final location (requires two people due to weight)
- Connecting the lift mechanism to its power supply (typically a pre-wired, plug-in connection)
- Mounting the TV on the lift platform using the included or specified VESA hardware
- Routing cables through the cabinet's integrated cable management channels
- Plugging the cabinet into a standard wall outlet
- Testing the lift operation with the remote
Most installations take 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on complexity and experience.
Tools You'll Typically Need
- Phillips head screwdriver (or drill with bit)
- A second person to help lift and position the cabinet
- A level (to ensure the cabinet sits plumb)
- Possibly furniture dolly or moving straps for heavy models
When Should You Hire Help?
Consider professional help if:
- You're installing in a very tight space that requires precise maneuvering
- The cabinet needs to be anchored to a wall (in earthquake zones or for safety with children)
- You want the cabinet hardwired to a wall outlet rather than plug-in
- You're integrating with a home automation system (Crestron, Control4, etc.) that requires professional programming
Can One Person Do It?
Technically, a very determined person could manage solo, but we don't recommend it. TV lift cabinets weigh 150 to 400+ pounds depending on size and wood species. Moving them safely and positioning them without scratching floors or walls really requires two people. The TV mounting step is also much easier with two sets of hands.
What About the Electrical?
No special wiring is needed for most plug-in models. A standard grounded 110V outlet within reach (typically behind the cabinet or nearby) is all that's required. If you want a cleaner look with the outlet hidden in the wall directly behind the cabinet, a licensed electrician can add a recessed outlet for under $200 in most markets — a worthwhile optional upgrade.
