If you are moving into a brand new home, you’ll need to get started on home decor. And that is something that can completely overwhelm you.

So, here’s a quick, practical guide on how to get started.

  1. Do research- Home decor is not a two-month project. It is an ongoing thing, but you need to make sure that you have the right start. For that, you need to do some solid research. Look around in stores, look online. Take pictures and screenshots of what you like. Then look for similarities in all those pictures. When you analyze them, you will notice some clear features. For example, all those pictures probably feature rooms with neutral color palettes, shiplap walls, black accents, multiple rugs in the living and dining space, or even modern furniture like storage ottomans and a hidden TV lift cabinet. Use these details to define your tastes. Find your style.
  2. Declutter- Once you know the style you are looking for, start cutting down on what you have. You always need a clear workspace no matter what task you are taking on. So, decluttering is a must before you get started on your home decor. Get rid of everything that is superficial or unnecessary and also everything that doesn't quite have a pleasant feel to it. Doing your research before decluttering will help you figure out what you will simply not want or need. Decluttering also includes considering furniture that can give you more storage, like ottomans for the children’s toys, baskets to put pillows and throws into, or a hidden TV lift cabinet to take care of all the TV wires and gadgets.
  3. Rearrange stuff- Home decor is not only about buying tons of new stuff. It is about getting the right feel and look, and that can be achieved even by simply rearranging the stuff that you already have. For greater flexibility, you could mix stuff from two rooms and redo a space. Additionally, you could get one new addition and work everything around it. A new hidden TV lift cabinet can be strategically placed as a space divider, a couch could be moved around to open up the seating plan, and some lamps could be brought in from another room to add more layers of lighting. There are a lot of possibilities!
  4. Add personality to your space - Don’t buy generic artwork. It’s just not cool, and doesn’t do your decor any favors. Instead, use stuff that you can actually relate to. Create your own art pieces- it is a lot easier than you think! You could put up some of your pictures too. If you really want to buy artwork, look for unique pieces that speak to you. If they are too expensive, we’d say wait. Sometimes you can get the right piece at a yard sale too! So, keep an eye out for stuff, and don’t rush into buying stuff and then regret it later.
